Underly, Kerr square off to be Wisconsin education chief

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A rural superintendent backed by Democrats faces a retired suburban Milwaukee superintendent largely supported by Republicans in Tuesday’s election to select Wisconsin’s top education official.

Pecatonica Superintendent Jill Underly, who also has the backing of the state teachers union, faces former Brown Deer Superintendent Deb Kerr, a supporter of the private school voucher program, in the race to become secretary of the state Department of Public Instruction.

Turnout is traditionally low in spring elections, usually around 20%.

The race was officially nonpartisan, but Democrats and their money lined up solidly behind Underly while Kerr found support

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Tony Evers called on the Republican-controlled Legislature Tuesday to bolster funding for K-12 and higher education and reform the state’s criminal justice systems, while delivering a state budget with $1 billion in tax increases and liberal policy priorities that GOP leaders promised to quickly kill.

Evers pitched his $91 billion two-year state budget to the Legislature as a “Badger Bounceback” agenda as the coronavirus pandemic enters its second year.

Wisconsin Releases Guidelines For Going Back To School In Fall

MILWAUKEE, WI — Staggered start times, four-day school weeks, class rotations and smaller classroom groups are all among the recommendations Wisconsin school officials made Monday as districts across the state plan for a return to school this fall.

On Monday, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction published Education Forward, an 83-page report for Wisconsin district and school leaders to use as they plan for a return to school for the 2020-21 school year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers ordered all public and private schools to close on March 18 amid the pandemic.
