Under state pressure to reopen schools, Miami school board to hold emergency session

The Miami-Dade County School Board will convene an emergency meeting Tuesday to discuss reopening schools, this time under pressure from the Florida Department of Education to open schools Monday.

Days after the board voted on a conditional timeline of reopening schools between Oct. 14 and Oct. 21, Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran sent a sternly worded letter to Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and board chair Perla Tabares Hantman on Friday. He accused the board of contradicting the district’s state-approved reopening plan, which says the district would determine by Sept. 30 if “local conditions meet the criteria established” to open schools

English schools reopen with pressure on PM Johnson after COVID-19 closure

LONDON (Reuters) – Schools in England and Wales will finally reopen on Tuesday to all students for a new term after the COVID-19 pandemic forced their closure, leading to cancelled exams and throwing student grades into chaos.

The Department for Education said that a “system of controls” would be in place to keep pupils and teachers safe, with social distancing maintained whenever

Boris Johnson has appealed to parents to send their children to schools when they reopen next week as a major union warned more teachers are needed in preparation.

The National Education Union (NEU) also accused ministers of being “negligent in the extreme”, saying schools had been left in the dark on how to deal with a coronavirus outbreak.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has warned the exams crisis that has engulfed the government for a fortnight has put the planned reopening of schools “at risk”.

But the prime minister thanked school staff who he said had

New York governor says schools can reopen for in-person classes

Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave New York schools the green light Friday to reopen classrooms in the fall.

Cuomo’s announcement ended weeks of speculation about whether New York would follow others in delaying in-person education — and as the number of new coronavirus cases continued to tick down in a state that was once the nation’s pandemic hot spot.

“We are probably in the best situation in the country right now,” Cuomo said on a call with reporters. “If anybody can open schools, we can open schools and that’s true for every region in the state.”

But Cuomo’s announcement is not
