SC Gov. McMaster spends $10.5M, mostly for charter schools

South Carolina’s charter schools will get another infusion of money to help keep up with student enrollment growth.

On Wednesday, Gov. Henry McMaster’s office announced the Columbia Republican will spend $9 million out of his federal discretionary COVID-19 education account on charter school growth and $1.5 million for the state’s Department of Commerce to help with workforce development.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signs Education and Workforce Equity Act into law

From early childhood through their college years, all Illinois students will be able to receive what state legislators promise will be a more fair and inclusive education, after Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Monday signed a “bedrock pillar” of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ agenda.

The governor said the bill “really does raise up our children everywhere in the state and advances equity in a way that we can all be proud.”

The omnibus legislation, passed during the General Assembly’s lame duck session in January, addresses early childhood, primary, secondary and higher education.

Former Mississippi Gov. William Winter dies at 97

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Former Mississippi Gov. William Winter, a Democrat who pushed to strengthen public education and improve race relations, has died. He was 97.

Winter, who was governor from 1980 to 1984, died Friday night at home in Jackson, family spokesman Dick Molpus said Saturday. Molpus is a former Mississippi secretary of state who had worked on Winter’s gubernatorial staff.

Gov. Walz Announces ‘Safe Learning Plan’ For Minnesota Schools

TWIN CITIES, MN — Gov. Tim Walz and other state officials Thursday announced Minnesota’s “Safe Learning Plan” for the 2020-21 school year. This fall, under Walz’s plan, Minnesota school districts and charter schools will have the option to begin in one of three models: in-person, distance learning, or a hybrid model.
