D.C. has failed to adequately collect detailed student education data, audit report finds

The city swiftly rebutted the report, calling many of the claims “unfounded” and arguing that it fails to note the “monumental” amount of progress the city has made in collecting data over the past five years. The Office of the State Superintendent said it has abided by all federal grant rules to build out the system and provided a 2020 letter from the U.S. Education Department saying that the city properly used its 2007 and 2012 federal grant money to build these data systems and that the agency has “evidence of successful completion of the projects.”

Only six in ten pupils are getting a full education despite schools going back, a London School of Economics study has found as researchers warn of “permanent scarring” to the Covid generation.

During late September and early October, just 59 per cent of pupils benefitted from “full schooling”, a new report by the LSE’s Centre for Economic Performance has found.  

This compared to around four in ten (38 per cent) who had full schooling – defined as spending at least five hours on work

Report finds ‘significant lack of equity’ in K-12 education, Michigan Civil Rights Commission says

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission released a 62-page report Wednesday, Sept. 30, describing inequities in Michigan’s K-12 education system. The report also detailed recommendations for policy makers and educators to implement to make achieving educational equity a priority in all Michigan schools.

The adoption of the report passed unanimously at a Wednesday Michigan Civil Rights Commission meeting.

Stacie Clayton, Chair of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, said the report revealed a “significant lack of equity” in Michigan’s K-12 education system.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a “devastating” impact on the education of children from poorer backgrounds, a new global survey has found, with eight in ten children surveyed saying they have learned little or nothing while schools have been closed.

Meanwhile violence at home doubled, with the reported rate at 17 per cent compared to eight per cent when the child was attending school in person.

Teen birth rates decline another year, CDC report finds, but Black and Hispanic rates see less significant change

Overall teenage birth rates have fallen across the country, but women’s health care providers are concerned about the sharp disparities between white teenagers and teenagers of color.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report Friday that found U.S. birth rates for women between the ages of 15 and 19 had declined in 38 states, 7% across the entire country in 2018. While white teenagers saw a significant decline in 29 states, Hispanic and Black teenagers saw a decline in only 10 states.
